At present , Engineering is considered as a most highly rated career field . More than 60% students are taking maths only because they see their fortune in the exciting field of Engineering . Usually people starts with preparation for IIT-JEE in the 11th standard( intermediate college in some states), and usually starts with a IIT-JEE coaching class (By paying loads of money) to secure admission in prestigious engineering colleges of India.
But after getting ranks in all the prestigious exam like IIT-JEE , BITSAT and AIEEE(There are others too but i can't mention all) . The question which usually ponders in one's mind is that which college should i take? If he has got a very good rank in IIT-JEE ( according to me it's upto AIR 1200) , he will definitely heads off for any IIT ( which IIT -- it's also a very difficult Question). But what to do when u are not up to that mark.Obviously you will see some magazines and will find out which college suits you.
But can you believe on the rankings provided by these magazines.I saw nearly all magazines rankings and I was surprised to see all the surveys neglected the actual facts.See the rankings provided by OUTLOOK , DATAQUEST , NAAC .
If a person don,t know anything about the engineering colleges he is obviously going to believe them because these magazines are read by the common people. So, for a common person(like us) it is too difficult to decide which college should he take ? To get the solution of this problem i chit-chatted with some of my friends and came up with rankings of my own . They just shows the general perception of the students who are studying in BITS-pilani(my college friends) and some other good engineering college(coaching friends) .
Rankings of Indian engineering colleges (Top 20)
1. IIT Bombay (No matter what rankings says.... all toppers of JEE prefers Mumbai -- for exposure and better company interface)
2. IIT Delhi ( Same reason, Best branch - MSC. mathematics and computing )
3. IIT Kanpur ( Best for computer science and electronic science branches)
4. IIT Kharagpur ( Vast college and one of the jewel of India)
5. IIT Madras (Best known for it's computer science)
6. BITS Pilani ( One of the oldest college of India ,famous for its VLSI lab and PARAM 10000 super computer , one of the best college for electronics and computer science students )
7. IIT Roorkee ( Dream college for civil engineering )
8. IT BHU
9. IIIT Hyderabad
10.IIT Guwahati (newly built campus)
11.ISM Dhanabad
12.DCE Delhi ( A Brand name for Mechanical Engineering )

We saw the trends of people taking admission in different colleges according to their respective rankings and after talking to different students of different colleges.
This is not a authorized ranking by any institute or ORGANIZATION . it's my own perception(including my friends). We have done this because any aspirants who wants to make a career in Engineering can get a better idea of Indian engineering colleges.
